The Story
OrganizerTeamwork Arts, best known for the Jaipur Literature Festival, expanded into music programming through Jazz India Circuit with the conviction that jazz, as the world's pre-eminent improvisational music tradition, deserves the same curatorial seriousness in India that Indian classical music receives internationally. India's own jazz community, while smaller than the classical or folk music worlds, has a distinguished history: Braz Gonsalves, Louis Banks, Ranjit Barot, and more recently Arjun Mohan and the new generation of Indian jazz musicians, has produced internationally recognised artists. Jazz India Circuit creates the platform for these musicians to perform alongside international counterparts in contexts that honour the music's improvisational character. The multi-city format reflects the geography of India's jazz audience, which is concentrated in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai.
Jazz India Circuit addresses a genuine gap in India's live music infrastructure: the absence of a credible national platform for contemporary jazz that connects Indian and international practitioners. Its Teamwork Arts provenance gives it curatorial ambition and production quality that independent jazz promoters in India's cities have not been able to replicate at national scale.
India's contemporary jazz community, though small, includes internationally recognised musicians and a sophisticated audience; Jazz India Circuit provides the national platform this community has lacked, connecting Indian artists with global counterparts.
