◆  Atlas Commentary

A well-founded festival with a strong inaugural edition and consistent institutional backing from G Plus. Data on editions after 2016-17 is limited; the Wikipedia entry shows 2017 as the most recent tracked edition, suggesting possible hiatus or irregular programming. Verify current status before programming.

The Story

Organizer

Northeast India is largely absent from India's mainstream theatre circuit. Productions from Mumbai and Delhi's major theatre companies rarely tour to Guwahati, and Guwahati's own theatre community, while active in Assamese-language drama, has limited access to the national English-language and Hindi theatre world. The Guwahati Theatre Festival was conceived by G Plus and its founder Sunit Jain to address this gap: by bringing national-calibre theatre to Pragjyoti ITA, one of Northeast India's best-equipped performing arts venues, the festival creates access for Guwahati audiences and provides a platform for Northeast India's own theatre practitioners alongside visiting companies.

Cultural Significance

GTF is the primary annual platform for serious theatre in Northeast India and the primary vehicle for connecting Guwahati's theatre community with the national theatre circuit. The ITA Cultural Complex, with its professional staging facilities, is one of the Northeast's best theatre venues and gives the festival infrastructure that few Northeast institutions have.
