The Story
OrganizerDesignUp began in 2016 as a small, independent gathering of designers and product creators in Bengaluru, born of the conviction that India's growing technology sector needed a serious, rigorous conversation about design as a strategic discipline rather than a decorative afterthought. Founded by Jay Dutta and run as a community-led, volunteer-driven event, it was never intended to be a corporate conference. That origin has defined its character across a decade: the speaker selection process is merit-based (over 89 per cent of speakers have historically been selected on content quality, not sponsorship), the programme spans keynotesconversations, masterclasses, workshops, and art installations, and the ethos is explicitly cross-disciplinary, drawing not only designers and UX researchers but product managers, CTOs, founders, doctors, and HR professionals. By 2019, DesignUp had expanded into a festival format with over 1,350 attendees, exhibits, art installations, studio visits, and 70+ speakers. By 2025, the conference drew 1,380 attendees and global leaders from Adobe, Canva, SAP, Netflix, and the Nielsen Norman Group, exploring how design shapes trust and innovation in an AI-shaped world. The 2026 edition, DesignUp26, returns to Bengaluru for its 10th anniversary as a four-day event at the Sheraton Grand Bengaluru Whitefield Hotel and Convention Center, 1-4 October. Simultaneously, DesignUp made its European debut in Berlin in April 2026, cementing its status as Asia's premier design-in-tech conference with international reach.
DesignUp's cultural significance lies in its role as the primary institutional forum for design as a strategic, interdisciplinary, and professional discipline in the Indian technology and creative ecosystem. India's design education sector has expanded rapidly but unevenly, and the professional practice of design in product and technology companies lacks the institutional forums that equivalent professional communities have in the US or Europe. DesignUp fills this gap: for a decade, it has been the gathering where India's senior design leaders, emerging practitioners, and design-curious professionals from adjacent fields have convened to exchange knowledge, build careers, and articulate the value of design to non-design stakeholders. Its influence on careers, culture, and hiring decisions within the Indian design and product ecosystem is disproportionate to its size, partly because of the quality and diversity of its speaker selection and partly because of its community-driven model which avoids the pay-to-play dynamics of many industry conferences.
In 2026, the tenth anniversary of DesignUp arrives at a moment when the intersection of design and artificial intelligence is the defining question for product-oriented professionals across India's technology sector. The conference's decade-long track record of meritocratic speaker selection and cross-disciplinary audience building makes it the right forum for this conversation, and one that no equivalent event in India matches.
DesignUp has functioned as the primary career and knowledge infrastructure for India's design-in-tech community for a decade. Its speaker archive, community of alumni, and reputation for merit-based curation have shaped hiring decisions, career directions, and the professional self-understanding of a generation of Indian designers and product leaders. Its 2026 European expansion marks the beginning of a second phase in which its influence extends beyond India.
