OrganizerEvery August, the quiet fishing village of Kovalam, also called Covelong, on the coast just south of Chennai, comes alive as host to the Covelong Point Surf, Music and Yoga Festival, widely regarded as India's premier surfing event. The festival was born in 2013, when the TT Group and the music organisation EarthSync joined forces with the Surfing Federation of India to create the Covelong Point Classic, staging India's foremost surf competition alongside a music festival on the same stretch of beach.
The location is not incidental. Kovalam is often called India's first surfing village, home to the Covelong Point Social Surf School, and the festival grew directly out of that community. Local fishermen, having taken up surfing, went on to compete in national and international events, and the festival uses surfing as a catalyst for positive change, empowering the Kovalam community around a sport many of them now excel at. The event weaves together three elements, surf, music and yoga, across a weekend: national and international surf competitions in the waves, a music lineup spread across multiple stages, and yoga, meditation and wellness workshops on the sand, all set among a flea market, food stalls, art installations and beachside activities that draw visitors from across India and abroad.
Over its editions the festival has grown in stature, at times tying up with the Asian Surfing Championship and, more recently, hosting rounds of the East Coast Pro Tour and helping launch India's first international surfing competition under the World Surf League. It was called off in 2020 and 2021 during the pandemic and has since returned. Organised by the TT Group and the Covelong Point Social Surf School with the Surfing Federation of India, and inaugurated in recent years by state ministers, the festival has become both a fixture of the Indian surf calendar and a lively cultural weekend that blends sport, music and wellness in an unusual, distinctly coastal package.
Covelong Point is significant as the event that put Indian surfing on the map and as a rare fusion of sport, music and wellness culture. Its deepest cultural resonance, though, comes from its roots: it emerged from a community initiative that transformed the lives of young fishermen in Kovalam, several of whom became champion surfers, and it continues to channel the festival's visibility into community empowerment. This makes it more than a lifestyle event; it is a case study in how sport and culture can drive social change in a coastal community. By pairing that mission with a serious music program and wellness offering, it has also helped define a distinctly Indian beach-festival culture on the country's eastern coast.
