The Story

Organizer

The Bengaluru International Film Festival (BIFFES) traces its origins to the Suchitra Bangalore International Film Festival, first held from 22 to 28 December 2006 in collaboration with the Suchitra Film Society, screening over 100 films. It has since grown into a government-backed annual festival, organised jointly by the Karnataka Chalanachitra Academy (Karnataka Film Academy) and the state's Department of Information and Public Relations on behalf of the Government of Karnataka. BIFFES is accredited by the International Federation of Film Producers' Associations (FIAPF), making it one of only five internationally accredited film festivals in India, alongside IFFI (Goa), MAMI (Mumbai), the Kolkata International Film Festival, and the International Film Festival of Kerala. Recent editions have screened over 200 films from more than 60 countries across multiple competitive sections (Asian, Indian/Chitrabharati, and Kannada cinema), drawing more than 12,000 delegates and around 100,000 total footfall in a typical edition. The festival is formally chaired by Karnataka's Chief Minister and inaugurated with significant state government involvement each year; media reporting around the 2025 edition also noted a period described as 'bureaucratic deadlock' affecting the festival's organisation, which was subsequently resolved before that edition proceeded. The 17th edition is scheduled for 29 January to 6 February 2026.

Cultural Significance

BIFFES's significance rests on two things: its FIAPF accreditation, which places it among a small group of internationally recognised competitive film festivals in India, and its direct, formal government ownership, run by a state Film Academy on behalf of the Karnataka government, with the Chief Minister personally chairing the organising committee in most recent editions. That level of direct state government involvement, down to gubernatorial attendance at the closing ceremony, is unusual even among India's other government-linked festivals, and ties the festival closely to Karnataka's political and administrative calendar rather than to an independent cultural institution. Its dedicated Kannada competition section also gives it a distinct role in showcasing regional-language cinema on an internationally accredited platform, alongside its Asian and Indian competitive sections.

Why It Matters Today

BIFFES remains active and continues to draw substantial scale: recent editions have screened over 200 films from 60-plus countries across roughly 13 screens, with more than 12,000 delegates and around 100,000 total footfall. Its FIAPF accreditation and direct government backing distinguish it clearly from privately or commercially organised film festivals elsewhere in this Atlas. For institutional and CSR audiences, it is a useful example of a fully state-government-run cultural institution, useful as a contrast point against not-for-profit or corporate-funded festivals, though its scale and organisation have depended in practice on continuity of political will and administrative coordination each year, as reflected in the reported 2025 organisational difficulties before that edition went ahead.
