The Story
OrganizerAILF was established in 2016 to create a dedicated literary festival platform for Ahmedabad, which as Gujarat's largest city is a natural home for a regional literature festival but had lacked a sustained annual forum. Founder Umashanker Yadav built a festival that balances Gujarati and Hindi literary culture with international voices, reflecting Ahmedabad's identity as a city that is both deeply regional and commercially cosmopolitan. The festival's location at institutions like the Knowledge Consortium of Gujarat grounds it in the city's educational infrastructure.
AILF's significance is as the primary annual literary festival anchored in Gujarati literary culture. Gujarat has a strong regional literature tradition across Gujarati and Hindi, but its literary community has historically been underserved by the major literary festival circuit. AILF's multi-language programming -- covering Gujarati, Hindi, regional and international literature -- reflects the city's actual literary diversity.
Gujarat's primary literary festival, giving Gujarati culture and Ahmedabad's extraordinary UNESCO World Heritage City status a platform within India's literary festival circuit.
