Konark is a small town in Odisha's Puri district whose identity is entirely defined by the Konark Sun Temple, a 13th-century UNESCO World Heritage Site built by King Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga dynasty in the form of a colossal chariot of the sun god Surya, and by the Konark Dance Festival, one of India's most prestigious classical dance events, held annually in December against the backdrop of the illuminated temple. The Sun Temple's carved exterior includes some of the finest examples of Odishan temple sculpture, including the famous erotic panels and the 108 musician and dancer carvings.
