About

Bombay Jayashri, born Jayashri Ramnath on 23 October 1963 in Kolkata, is one of the most sought-after Carnatic vocalists today and the fourth generation of musicians in her family. First trained by her parents, she became a disciple of the violin maestro Lalgudi G. Jayaraman, absorbing the Lalgudi school's emphasis on emotional expression, lyrical beauty and structural clarity, and also trained under T.R. Balamani.

Jayashri received the Padma Shri in 2021 and the Madras Music Academy's Sangita Kalanidhi in 2023, and earned an Academy Award nomination for the song Pi's Lullaby from Life of Pi. She was the first Carnatic musician to perform at the Sydney Opera House and the second, after M.S. Subbulakshmi, to perform at Carnegie Hall. Her wide-ranging collaborations include work with the Finnish composer Eero Hameenniemi and the symphonic Sandham project, and she co-authored the book Voices Within.

The artistry

Jayashri sings with a soft-grained, meditative voice and a strong devotional undercurrent, shaped by the lyrical, bhava-rich Lalgudi school. She moves between pure classical recitals, playback and ambitious cross-cultural and symphonic collaborations.

⬩ Atlas Perspective

Bombay Jayashri connects on the Culture Atlas graph to the Carnatic Music artform profile, to the Chennai Margazhi Music Season festival profile and to the Chennai destination profile.
