About

Abhishek Majumdar is an acclaimed Indian playwright and theatre director, founder of the Bangalore-based companies Indian Ensemble and the Bhasha Centre for Performing Arts. His politically bold, text-driven plays, several staged internationally, have made him one of the most significant Indian dramatists of his generation.

Active since 2004, Abhishek Majumdar founded Indian Ensemble and the Bhasha Centre in Bangalore and built an internationally recognised body of playwriting and direction. His work has been staged at London's Royal Court and elsewhere, and has at times drawn political pressure and threats, which he has met with quiet courage, becoming a leading voice for theatre as a humanising, questioning force.

The artistry

Majumdar's theatre is defined by extensive, argument-driven dramaturgy and an unflinching engagement with conflict and power, from Kashmir to Tibet. His plays, including The Djinns of Eidgah and Pah-la, both staged in London, and Kaumudi, Muktidham and Salt, confront censorship and violence, guided by his belief that art's role is to question power.
