Saptak School of Music is a leading music school and cultural institution in Ahmedabad, founded in 1980 by the tabla maestro Nandan Mehta and the sitar exponent Manju Mehta. Dedicated to the teaching of Indian classical music, it is renowned above all for the Saptak Annual Festival of Music, held every January since 1980, one of India's most important classical music festivals, which over its long run has presented almost every major name in Hindustani and Carnatic music to large and devoted audiences.
Founded in 1980 by Nandan Mehta and Manju Mehta, Saptak grew from a music school into one of the most respected institutions of Indian classical music, its name, meaning the seven notes of the octave, reflecting its devotion to music. Its annual January festival, launched the same year, became a cornerstone of the Indian classical music calendar, drawing the greatest performers and thousands of listeners to Ahmedabad each year, while the school continued to train students in the classical tradition.
