About

To support and promote excellence in Indian arts, literature and culture through grants, publications and cultural programmes.

New Delhi foundation established from S.H. Raza's estate. Grants to artists, writers and musicians across disciplines. Led by Ashok Vajpeyi. One of the most artistically principled private arts foundations in India.

Syed Haider Raza was a founding member of the Progressive Artists Group in Bombay in 1947 and spent most of his career in France, developing the geometric abstract paintings for which he is celebrated. His work became among the most valuable of any Indian modern artist at auction. Raza returned to India permanently in 2010 at the age of 87 and established the Foundation with the explicit intention of giving his estate back to the arts. He chose Ashok Vajpeyi as Honorary Director, reflecting a longstanding shared commitment to artistically principled cultural philanthropy. Raza died in July 2016 at the age of 94.

⬩ Atlas Assessment

The Raza Foundation is one of the few private arts foundations in India whose endowment derives from an artist's own estate, creating a direct connection between the resources generated by artistic achievement and their return to the arts. Raza's decision to give his estate back is an act of cultural generosity rare in the Indian context.

[Atlas Perspective] The Raza Foundation represents the most artistically principled model of private cultural philanthropy in India: resources generated by artistic work, returned to artistic work, guided by artistic values rather than corporate or reputational considerations. Ashok Vajpeyi's leadership ensures the grant-making reflects genuine engagement with Indian cultural life.

The Foundation's public documentation of its grant-making is limited. [Atlas Assessment] Its cultural significance is clear from its founding story and leadership; the specific quantum and scope of its programme remain not fully documented in public records. Cultural organisations seeking support should approach through the network of artists and scholars with whom the Foundation has established relationships.
