Lamakaan, meaning a house without boundaries, is an open, non-profit cultural centre off Road No. 1 in Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, which began hosting events in March 2010. Founded by Ashhar Farhan, Humera Ahmed, Biju Mathew and Elahe Hiptoola in a family building, it describes itself simply as Hyderabad's free, open, inclusive, liberal cultural space, providing an affordable and independent venue for theatre, music, literature, film and public debate, and is widely credited with almost single-handedly revitalising theatre and independent cultural life in the city. It is open from 10 am to 10 pm, Tuesday through Sunday.
Lamakaan grew out of a family property in Banjara Hills, opened as a free cultural space in 2010 with a deliberate ethos of independence: every event must be open to all, ticket prices are capped at a nominal amount, and events with government or corporate sponsorship are not permitted, with the venue sustained largely by its popular cafe. In just over a decade it became one of Hyderabad's most iconic cultural institutions, its calendar filled with plays, concerts, mushairas, film screenings, book launches, folk-art performances, discussions and community gatherings, providing a platform to upcoming and established artists alike.
Lamakaan is one of India's most admired independent cultural spaces, a model of an open, non-commercial venue that revitalised Hyderabad's performing-arts and literary life and demonstrated the power of an accessible community-run cultural commons.
