About

To reflect South Asia's history, sociocultural and geopolitical narratives through contemporary art; to advocate for underrepresented regional practices, especially from East and Northeast India.

Emami Art is a contemporary art gallery and cultural production space established in 2017, located on the ground floor of the Kolkata Centre for Creativity's Green Building at 777, Anandapur, EM Bypass, Kolkata. Spanning 10,000 sq ft, it is one of the largest contemporary art spaces in East India. The gallery represents emerging, mid-career and established artists whose practices engage with South Asia's history, materiality and contemporary experience, with particular emphasis on the East and Northeast regions of India. Works by represented artists are held in major national and international collections including public foundations and museums. The gallery participates actively in national and international art fairs and is chaired by Richa Agarwal, Chairperson of the Kolkata Centre for Creativity.

Emami Art was conceived by Emami Group founders R.S. Agarwal and R.S. Goenka -- both known as connoisseurs of music, dance, art and theatre -- as part of the broader Kolkata Centre for Creativity project. The KCC is described as India's first integrated art centre for interdisciplinary arts. Emami Art occupies its gallery floor. The gallery's focus on East and Northeast India is a deliberate editorial choice: these regions are historically underrepresented in India's national art narrative, which is dominated by Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru. By centering Eastern and Northeastern practices, Emami Art has positioned itself as the primary institutional advocate for this geographic region's artistic production at a national and international level.

⬩ Atlas Assessment

Emami Art's significance is primarily regional and geographic. Kolkata's contemporary art ecosystem has historically operated at a distance from the Mumbai-Delhi axis that dominates India's commercial and institutional art world. Emami Art is the most ambitious attempt in recent years to insert Kolkata and eastern India back into that national conversation, both through its 10,000 sq ft gallery programme and through its participation in India Art Fair and international platforms. Its special focus on Northeast India fills an even larger gap: the northeast's contemporary visual arts scene is almost entirely underdocumented in national institutional contexts.

[Atlas Perspective] CultureAtlas profiles Emami Art as the most important contemporary art institution currently operating in East India. Its KCC base, its scale, and its deliberate geographic focus make it the counterweight to Delhi and Mumbai that Kolkata has needed. CultureAtlas notes that the gallery is relatively young (founded 2017) and its long-term track record is still developing -- but its ambition and the ecosystem gap it fills justify its Atlas rating.
