The Bhatkhande Music Institute in Lucknow, now a state music university, is one of the oldest and most important centres of Hindustani classical music education in India, founded in 1926 by the pioneering musicologist Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande. Built on his systematisation of raga, tala and notation, it offers structured degree education in vocal and instrumental music and dance, and has been foundational to the modern teaching of Hindustani music.
Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande, who codified the theory of Hindustani music and devised widely used systems of notation and raga classification, established the institution in Lucknow in 1926 to teach music in a structured, accessible way. It became a model for music education across India, training generations of musicians and scholars, and was later elevated to the status of a music university.
