The Aditya Birla Group, one of India's oldest and largest business houses, has been a longstanding patron of the performing arts. In 1973 Aditya Vikram Birla established the Sangit Kala Kendra to promote and present cultural activities and to provide a platform for artists, and the Group instituted the prestigious Aditya Vikram Birla Kala Kiran Puraskar and Kalashikhar Puraskar, which honour distinguished and emerging artists in Indian classical music, dance and the arts. Through these initiatives and its wider community work, the Group has been a consistent supporter of the Indian arts.
Aditya Vikram Birla, who led the Group's expansion before his early death in 1995, founded the Sangit Kala Kendra in 1973 out of a personal commitment to the arts. In his memory the Group instituted awards, the Kala Kiran Puraskar for emerging talent and the Kalashikhar Puraskar for lifetime achievement, which have become sought-after honours in the Indian classical arts, conferred on many leading and rising musicians and dancers. This sustained patronage has made the Aditya Birla Group one of the more prominent corporate supporters of the performing arts in India.
