The Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata is one of the oldest fine-arts societies in India, formally established in 1933 by the art patron Lady Ranu Mukherjee. Situated on Cathedral Road at the heart of the city's cultural district, it houses extensive galleries, an auditorium and a conference centre, and holds important collections of paintings, textiles and other works.
Founded in 1933 by Lady Ranu Mukherjee and at first housed in a room loaned by the Indian Museum, the Academy of Fine Arts grew, with the patronage of B. C. Roy and Jawaharlal Nehru in the 1950s, into a major art institution on Cathedral Road, beside St. Paul's Cathedral and the Rabindra Sadan cultural complex. With over six thousand square feet of galleries, an auditorium and valuable collections of paintings and textiles, it has for over nine decades been a central home for Kolkata's visual arts.
